In a bad economy, everyone is looking for ways to get more out of less…why should your wardrobe be any different? You need to learn how to hand wash your clothes. Subjecting your clothes to a washing machine significantly decreases their life span; unless you know how to hand wash your clothes. A shirt that could last you years starts to pull apart at the seams after 20 washings in a machine…all because you don’t know how to hand wash your clothes.
1) Plug your kitchen sink, then add about a quarter cup of detergent. You’re on the way to knowing how to hand wash your clothes.
2) Read the labels on your clothes. Just because you’re learning how to hand wash your clothes doesn’t mean you can throw a shirt marked cold water only into a piping hot sink full of water. So, if your clothes call for hot water, fill that sink of yours with hot water; if your clothes call for cold water… Fill the sink with water and remember to leave some room for the clothes.
3) Don’t wash dark clothes with whites. The same rules of separation apply whether you’re using a washing machine, or learning how to hand wash your clothes.
4) If you want to get your whites all sparkly and bright, go ahead and add a quarter cup of bleach to the sink full of water. Please don’t put your nice jeans, or any non-white items, into this bleach bath you’ve prepared…please? Learning how to hand wash your clothes doesn’t have to be dangerous!
5) Now that you’re learning how to hand wash your clothes, put them in the sink full of water and detergent, and stir around with your hands until all the clothes are wet. Yes, all of the clothes. Don’t leave some shirt in there with a few dry spots on it. If your clothes are stained, you can go ahead and let everything sit for a while and soak up that detergent goodness.
6) Come back to check on the soaking clothes…don’t they look serene? They’re happy because you learned how to hand wash your clothes! Well, we’re going to disturb them. Dig your hands in that water, squeeze those clothes, rub those clothes together, get some friction going in that water. That’s how to hand wash your clothes!
7) Let the water out of the sink and start running the same temperature water you had going before. Run this lovely temperature appropriate water over those sudsy clothes of yours until the water runs clear. Keep that water going until it’s so clear you’d be willing to drink it. You almost know how to hand wash your clothes…
8) Wring out your clean clothes and hang up to dry. You now know how to hand wash your clothes!
9) Brag to all of your friends that you now know how to hand wash your clothes. Ignore their disinterested looks and be proud.
